Maurice Harris – Black Florist Highlight
{By: Lauren Trunfio} Maurice Harris is a superstar in the floral industry. He is a one-of-a-kind individual with a magnificent creative vision, and even more inspirational work ethic. If you haven’t heard of Maurice before, prepare to be inspired.
Maurice Harris is best known for being the founder of Bloom & Plume, a luxury floral studio based in Los Angeles, California. Harris is incredibly successful and talented, as he has worked with a range of clients such as Ava DuVernay, and brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton. However, that does not mean that he isn’t incredibly humble and aware of his privilege. In an interview with the New York Times, Harris said that “People were interested in what was going on here, but don’t necessarily have access. I’ve tried to find ways to give entry points for people to feel comfortable.” This ultimately led to Harris opening up Bloom & Plume Coffee, which is Harris’s way of giving ordinary people an accessible entryway into his artwork and the magic that he has created.
Within the incredible span of his career, Harris also created a photography series called “The Color of Fear” as a way for himself to internally process the amount of black people who die at the hands of police. By using his art as a medium to hold himself accountable for prior thoughts and feelings surrounding his community, Harris was able to create something that continues to spark conversation by doing everything in his power to continually celebrate blackness.
Due to it being Black History Month, we want to highlight individuals that have done, and continue to do amazing things for the black community. Maurice Harris is just one out of countless individuals who strive to create meaningful work, and we will continue to highlight more inspiring individuals the rest of the month!
