Find a Hobby During National Hobby Month

{By: Lauren Trunfio} January is a month that we all tend to dedicate to new beginnings and fresh starts. We’ve all heard the expression, “New Year, New Me,” and while some of us might cringe at the redundant sentiment, I think there is true value to be gained by dedicating a new year towards bettering oneself. With that being said, for those who may not know, January is National Hobby Month, which gives us an even better excuse to put “New Year, New Me” into action (for real this time). If starting and keeping hobbies isn’t exactly your forté, here are some simple, yet fun examples that you can pick up this year and stick to.

Reading

We are all guilty of telling ourselves that we will read more, when in reality, it is a lot easier said than done. If you used to be an avid reader back in the day, and have had trouble reigniting that passion you once had, try giving yourself a realistic goal of books to hit by the end of the year (or month if you’d like to be more ambitious). Giving yourself a numerical goal will hold yourself accountable, instead of allowing yourself to slack off on reading. If reading was never a passion of yours and you hope to change that, give audio books a try. This will slowly allow a habit to start and build, while giving yourself the proper amount of time to complete each book.

Journaling

Starting and maintaining a journal may seem daunting at first, but it’s one of the most effective hobbies for one to start because it allows you time to self-reflect and carve out time for self-care. If you need some motivation to start, pick up an aesthetically pleasing journal that you wouldn’t mind displaying on your nightstand. This will hopefully help remind you to start writing each and every day. If you are still stuck finding motivation to begin, try looking up journal prompts on Pinterest. There are thousands of easy, yet interesting prompts that you can use to begin writing if you are stuck finding a starting ground.

Yoga

Exercising is not always the most fun to think about, but it is necessary in order to maintain a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle. We decided to highlight yoga as a hobby because it doesn’t require much prior training to start as a beginner, and it’s also another way to incorporate mindfulness into your lifestyle. We recommend finding yoga classes at a local gym, or at a REC Center closest to your house. Typically classes span from beginners to advanced, so you can begin at any level you’d like!

We know starting and keeping hobbies is not easy, but you’ll be proud of yourself for keeping up the effort.
