“The Healing Power of Dance: A Celebration of Life in Motion”

This year, what if we danced like our lives depend on it, because maybe our lives don’t actually depend on it but certainly the most alive version of us does.

I don’t know about you but I am deeply invested in living the most empowered version of my life, and one thing I have been missing these last few years is the way dancing empowers me and fills my life with unbounded joy.

Dance is a language all to itself, it expands our way of connecting outside of the spoken word. Dance is creativity, it is a way of sparking our curiosity.  It empowers us to feel our feelings and connect to one another through movement, to be aware of one another’s physical presence and the way we could be moving through the world together in more expansive ways. Dance is an expression of life, of joy, of grief, of longing.

Dancing is somatic healing. Dance reminds us of our connection to the Earth. When we dance, we push off the ground, realizing the support we take for granted every day.  Dance is a connection to all life, it is a celebration of life when we stay present in it, instead of thinking about how we might be perceived. Dance electrifies our lives and quite literally the earth (mycelium- the internet of the plant world- responds to the vibration of dance and expands so it can better share resources), allowing us to engage with the truest parts of ourselves – and all the life we touch empowering us to not only think outside of the box but realize there is no box.

I encourage you to join a local dance studio for a social dance class, choose any dance that interests you whether it be Salsa, Cha Cha, West Coast Swing, Tango etc., or incorporate more dance into your everyday life spending more time moving inside your body. It is an amazing way to reconnect to ourselves, learn something new, and challenge our brains (because dance doesn’t just help our bodies it helps our our brain too!)…oh and PS an hour of dancing is equal to an hour of running without the damage to your knees and hips, just saying. By Shana Francesca
