Summer Beach Reads: 10 Books To Indulge While You’re Soaking In The Sun!

{ By Emily O’Connell, Editorial Coordinator }

As restrictions lift and travel is becoming more accessible, beach trips are more promising this summer.  I’m ready to cast off into my old habits of hitting the beach at 10 am with my favorite beach chair, but I understand others might be weary of setting back into their routine.  Regardless of new or old traditions of setting back to the beach, this means the return of beach-read season (in a sad attempt, this is when I aim to meet my reading goal for the year).

Every summer there’s usually a list of top books to read that floats around the internet; here’s my ten:

  1. The Song of Achilles

A novel set during the Greek Heroic Age, it is an adaptation of Homer’s Iliad as told from the perspective of Patroclus.  I’m not deeply invested in mythology but found I couldn’t put this one down.

  1. The Mastery of Love

While this book isn’t in fact new (it was actually published in 1999), it’s about the art of relationships and how we can learn to love ourselves.  Miguel Ruiz shows readers how to heal emotional wounds that lead to suffering and drama.

  1. Malibu Rising

This book is perfect for summer—think movie stars and surfing, flawed but loving siblings, and an epic party that ends in disaster.

  1. Somebody’s Daughter: A Memoir

Author Ashley C. Ford shows how people and the critical moments—both big and small—can become hardwired into our lives and affect the way we react to and experience the world.

  1. The Other Black Girl

Rising discrimination and the marginalization of coworkers, two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing company.

  1. The Last Thing He Told Me

Soon to be a series starring Julia Roberts, this novel is about a devoted husband who disappears. Light on suspense, but still a page-turner.

  1. Seven Days in June

Eva Mercy is a single mom and a pressed, stressed erotica writer. Shane Hall is an enigmatic, award‑winning novelist, who, to everyone’s surprise, shows up in New York. You’ll have to read to find out what happens next.

  1. Atomic Habits

A novel that tops Amazon’s bestsellers almost every week. With the same habits, you will end up with the same results..

  1. Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry

This is an own voice story of an overly enthusiastic list maker who is blackmailed into completing a to-do list of all her worst fears. If you liked To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, there’s a good chance you’ll like this.

  1. All Along You Were Blooming

If you are a milk and honey fan there’s a good chance you’re going to like All Along You Were Blooming.  Inspiring you to live boundlessly, it’s a set of illustrated poetry and prose that celebrates hope and encounters grace.
