Essential Tasks That May Not Be On Your Spring Cleaning Checklist

The sun is shining, the days are getting longer and the mercury is rising. Spring is upon us. The arrival of warmer climes and the promise of hazy, hot summer days pushes many of us to think about cleaning, decluttering and freshening up our homes. If you’re planning to spring clean, it’s important to go deep. In this guide, we’ll highlight some essential chores that might not have made it onto your checklist.

Washing cushion covers, pillows and blankets

Warmer weather may be on the horizon, but that doesn’t mean that you can chuck blankets, throws, cushions and pillows in the attic and forget about them until fall. Now is an excellent time to wash cushion covers and throws ready to store them for the summer or swap them for lightweight fabrics to help you stay cool. We tend to focus on clothing, towels and kitchen cloths when doing the laundry, but it’s important to have clean, fresh, hygienic soft furnishings too. Check the care instructions before washing, as you may need to lower the temperature or hand wash some items.

Cleaning your refrigerator

The refrigerator is one of the most pivotal appliances in the home. Many spring cleaning checklists mention cleaning the fridge, but they don’t go deep enough. It’s beneficial to wipe your shelves and containers frequently and keep the door clean, but it’s also advisable to clean refrigerator coils. This enhances hygiene but it can also improve performance and energy efficiency, helping you lower running costs. To clean the coils effectively, remove the toe grill, vacuum the coils and then use a coil condenser brush.

Wiping skirting boards, socket covers and light switch panels

We all know that a good spring clean involves exerting elbow grease and wiping down the surfaces in our living spaces, but it’s easy to forget the smaller areas and more intricate jobs. Examples include cleaning the skirting boards and wiping socket covers and light switch panels. Use a soft cloth and remove excess moisture before gently gliding over the protective plastic cover on light switches and power sockets. You can vacuum and then use a cloth with warm, soapy water to eliminate dust and dirt from your skirting boards and picture rails.

Cleaning your drawers and cabinets

We all have cabinets and drawers that tend to end up covered in dust and stuffed with miscellaneous items. Decluttering can help you get rid of unwanted things and find homes for your belongings, but a good spring clean shouldn’t stop here. Cleaning the inside of your drawers, units and cabinets will help to remove dust and debris and create fresh, effective storage solutions. If you have glass in your display cabinets, TV unit or kitchen drawers, regular cleaning will also enhance the aesthetic of the room.

Spring cleaning checklists often focus on major jobs, such as vacuuming your home, decluttering, and cleaning the bathroom and kitchen, but they can be general. If you’re eager to complete a deep, thorough clean, don’t forget essential chores, such as washing cushion covers, pillows and blankets, cleaning your refrigerator, wiping your skirting boards and socket covers, and cleaning inside your drawers, units and cabinets.
