Spring Cleaning: Are Your Thoughts Hijacking You?
Written by: Jodi Silverman
DARE into Spring with some much needed Spring Cleaning. Nope, I’m not talking about decluttering your closets, the junk drawer or even the dreaded basement. I’m talking about something that most of you, including myself, have overlooked: your self-talk!
Spring Cleaning: Are Your Thoughts Hijacking You?
Yes, just like our homes, our minds can become cluttered with thoughts that no longer serve us. And if we’re not careful, these thoughts can hijack our emotions, creating unnecessary stress and holding us back from living confidently and joyfully.
The Hijacking of Our Thoughts and Emotions
Research shows that we have up to 60,000 thoughts a day, and shockingly, about 80% of them are negative. Even more surprising? Up to 95% of these thoughts are on repeat from the day before. That means many of us are stuck in an endless loop of self-doubt, worry, and negativity—like a record that keeps skipping on the same distressing tune.
Our thoughts are powerful because they trigger our emotions. When left unchecked, these emotions—stress, sadness, anger—can overwhelm us, leading to increased anxiety, depression, and even physical health issues like high blood pressure and heart disease. They can also strain our relationships and prevent us from fully embracing the joy of life.
So, what can we do to stop this cycle? How do we break free from the thoughts that hold us back?
Spring Cleaning Your Self-Talk with the My TALK Method
Your first Dare, should you choose to accept it is to commit to spring cleaning your self-talk. It starts with my T.A.L.K. Method. A simple yet powerful way to bring awareness to your thoughts and emotions so you can regain control and step into spring feeling confident and happier.
T.A.L.K. – Your Guide to Cleaning Up Your Self-Talk
✨ T – Take Notice Start paying attention to what you’re thinking throughout the day. Notice the thoughts that run through your mind and the emotions they trigger. Awareness is the first step toward change.
✨ A – Acknowledge Name the emotion you’re experiencing and observe how it feels in your body. This simple act of acknowledging your feelings creates space between you and your emotions, making them easier to manage.
✨ L – Learn From It Get curious about why you’re feeling the way you do. Ask yourself: What triggered this thought? Is it based on fact or assumption? Understanding your thought patterns helps you take back control.
✨ K – Kick It Out Challenge the negative thought or replace it with a more positive one. When you practice reframing your self-talk, you build resilience and strengthen your ability to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence.
