Honoring Women’s Entrepreneurship Day: Celebrating the Women Who Build, Lead, and Transform
Each year on November 19th, the world pauses to recognize a powerful force: the unstoppable power of women entrepreneurs. Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED), founded in 2014 by Wendy Diamond and now acknowledged by both the United Nations and the U.S. Congress, stands as a global call to uplift, support, and invest in women building businesses of every size, in every corner of the world. It is more than a day of recognition; it is a movement rooted in economic empowerment, innovation, and gender equality.
Women entrepreneurs have long been drivers of progress, often building companies and solutions despite systemic barriers. Today, women own nearly 13 million businesses in the United States alone, accounting for over 40 percent of all U.S. companies and contributing more than $1.8 trillion to the economy. Globally, women are launching businesses at an accelerating pace, especially in emerging markets, where entrepreneurship is often a direct pathway to financial independence. Yet despite their impact, women continue to face significant hurdles, limited access to capital, underrepresentation in leadership, and persistent gaps in visibility and support. Women’s Entrepreneurship Day was created to address these realities head-on.
WED events and initiatives are designed to educate, inspire, and connect women with the tools and networks needed to thrive. From pitch competitions and leadership panels to policy discussions and international campaigns, the mission is unified: strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem for women everywhere. These gatherings help amplify the voices of female founders, spotlight their achievements, and equip them with the resources to grow and scale their companies. They also serve as a reminder that when women succeed, communities, industries, and economies succeed with them.
The heart of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day lies not only in celebrating established women business leaders but also in igniting the next generation. When young women see entrepreneurs who look like them leading companies, shaping industries, and breaking boundaries, they gain permission to imagine and pursue a future beyond limitations. WED encourages mentorship, collaboration, and storytelling that spark ambition and build bridges across experience levels, cultures, and industries.
Still, the work continues. Access to capital for women founders remains disproportionately low, with less than 2 percent of global venture capital funding going to women-led startups. Women of color face even steeper challenges, often balancing entrepreneurship with systemic bias and unequal opportunity. Addressing these disparities requires intentional support, inclusive policies, and ongoing advocacy, precisely the mission that Women’s Entrepreneurship Day champions each year.
As we honor WED, we recognize the resilience, creativity, and leadership of women who continue to build and innovate despite barriers and odds. Their contributions are reshaping global commerce, redefining leadership, and reminding us that entrepreneurship is not just about business; it is about opportunity, access, and equity.
Celebrating Women’s Entrepreneurship Day means committing to a future where every woman has the tools, resources, and support to SCREAM HER DREAM™, build her vision, and lead with confidence. The impact of women entrepreneurs is powerful, lasting, and essential; and when the world invests in women, the world rises with them.
