Winter Activities for the Whole Family: From the Adventurous to the Cozy and Beyond

{ By Miranda Martin }

Recent snowstorms got you down? There are tons of fun, winter activities you can do with the whole family, from more adventurous activities like snowboarding and skiing to creating a cozy, delicious cup of hot cocoa and beyond. Here are some fun activities to do on a winter day!

Activities to do in the winter: the adventurous

For families ready for an adventure, you may want to head to the Poconos or the mountains of states like West Virginia (on the east coast) or Colorado (on the west coast) for awesome, fun-filled skiing or snowboarding vacation! Many ski resorts offer not only skiing and snowboarding trails and treks, but also skiing and snowboarding lessons for the younger and more inexperienced members of the family, snow tubing for some more relaxed fun, or even snowmobile tours. You can’t go wrong with a weekend at a ski resort, and that’s coming from someone who isn’t very good at skiing, considering there are so many other things for the whole family to do all weekend long at some of the nation’s top ski resorts and lodges!

Activities to do in the winter: the cozy

One of my favorite cozy activities to do in the winter hasn’t changed much since I was a kid, and it includes some pretty basic household items like pillows, blankets, and chairs. Yep– I’m talking about making a pillow fort! When my nieces come over it’s a great way to pass the time during a snowy day (when we want to stay indoors, or after a day of playing in the snow) while building the fort, and then of course it’s super-cozy when they enjoy a movie or TV show later on under the fort (while Auntie gets to take a much-needed breather on the couch)! This gives the younger family members something to work on and “build” during the day to keep them occupied during the stir-crazy winter months, and the parents or guardians to relax while the kids enjoy later on. You can’t go wrong with this simple, free, and fun cozy indoor winter activity!

Activities to do in the winter: for the foodies

Still, enjoying the winter baking and winter beverage craze? Honestly, same, and one super fun thing I’ve found to do in recent years with my nieces to pass the time on a snowy day is creating a DIY hot cocoa bar!

Creating a DIY hot cocoa bar is as simple as setting out a variety of hot chocolate mixes and milk, as well as additional toppings like whipped cream, chocolate shavings, peppermint pieces, and anything else you can think of! Get the ingredients ready and prepared, your mugs all lined up, and allow family members to help themselves to the creations in a buffet-style setting (or help the younger family members craft theirs). To make it even more fun, you can have a hot cocoa tasting contest (a-la, “who can make the best hot cocoa creation?”) and family members of all ages will find it a fun way to pass the time on a wintery day when you’d rather stay inside and stay warm.

So, what do you and your loved ones like to do in the winter? From the adventurous to the foodie-friendly, there are so many options to choose from when it comes to having a fun, family-friendly winter day!
